Eligibility

Am I eligible for the NDIS?

Understanding the criteria — and what to do if you're not sure.

NDIS eligibility criteria

To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet all of the following criteria:

1

Age

You must be under 65 years of age when you first apply. If you are 65 or older, the aged care system may be more appropriate.

2

Residency

You must be an Australian citizen, hold a permanent visa, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa and be living in Australia.

3

Disability

You have a disability caused by a permanent impairment — physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or psychosocial.

4

Significant impact

Your disability significantly affects your ability to participate in everyday activities or requires support from other people.

5

Lifelong support needs

You are likely to need NDIS support for your lifetime — the scheme is designed for permanent, ongoing disability needs.

What if I'm not sure?

Eligibility isn't always straightforward, and many people aren't sure whether their situation qualifies. Our team can help you think through your circumstances and, where appropriate, support you through the access request process.

You can also contact the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 to discuss your situation with their access team.

Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI)

Children under 9 with a developmental delay or disability may be eligible for Early Childhood Early Intervention support through the NDIS. This program helps children develop the skills they need before starting school and beyond.
